Music has been used to bring communities together with a major initiative in the Kingston borough. The major music project involved 40 free taster workshops being run for members of the public, covering everything from singing and songwriting to vocal and carnival music. The Kingston Sound Communities workshops took place throughout October and were open to residents aged 19 and over of all musical abilities.

Table tennis star has big plans
Young table tennis star Marcus Giles is not content with his latest victory – he now has his eye on the Olympics. Marcus, 13, from Kingston, recently won the Surrey U18 Open Championship title in the sport. He has also been the England No 1 in his age group since he was 10 years old. The Greenhouse Progress Table Tennis Club member says he is now aiming towards an Olympic appearance.

Teenager sits in the House of Commons
Teenager Rhammel Afflick took his seat in the House of Commons to take part in an annual debate by the UK’s Youth Parliament. Rhammel, 17, is Kingston’s representative on the Youth Parliament, which met in the House in November for a day of discussions. He said: “It is important because it decides what issues we’ll be campaigning on next year based on the young people that voted.

Boost for women’s football
Women’s football has been given a boost thanks to a new women’s football academy at Kingston College. England International Footballer Alex Scott officially opened The Alex Scott Academy. Students get app success
University students are hoping to go global with their phone app after winning a competition for their design. Thomas Valente and Andrew Gill, who have both just completed postgraduate degrees in motion graphics at Kingston University, and MA graphic design student Michael Azzopardi won a competition at the university for their new networking app.
