Severn Trent the water company closed the Suspension Bridge that goes over the River Trent in Nottingham for three days to clear mess that has been left by pigeons.
This action was taken after concerns were raised by bridge users about the mass of droppings that had been left by roosting birds. Diversion signs were put in place giving alternative routes.
Franco Scola, the Severn Trent reservoir supervisor, said: “Responding to concerns raised by members of the public, we need to close the bridge for three days in order to complete some essential repair work. There is a problem with pigeons and their droppings on the entrance to either side of the bridge making it unsightly and above all a health and safety issue.
“We are intending to install pigeon spikes to mitigate the issue as well as taking the opportunity to complete some necessary remedial works on the bridge. We apologise for the inconvenience.”
