A planning application submitted to council bosses could see vulnerable families benefit from an extra 22 new homes in Meldreth near Royston.
The plan, which was submitted by Jephson Homes Housing Association, would see 22 affordable houses and bungalows, including two, three and four-bedroom homes, built in Whitecroft Road.
A recent housing needs survey showed that there are 52 families in Meldreth needing better housing and the Jephson Homes Housing Association says that it hopes this new development of homes will go part way towards meeting this need.
Meldreth Parish Council put forward no recommendation to South Cambridgeshire District Council about the Association’s plans, but said: “The parish council is minded to approve, based on the need for extra social houses as evidenced by the latest housing register which shows 52 families with Meldreth connections in need of better housing and our own survey which shows over 75 per cent of former social housing is now in private ownership, but they have major concerns about certain issues.”
Concerns that were raised by the parish council included whether the existing sewage works would be able to cope with the new development of homes and whether the junction of the road would be safe.
“There is major concern over the traffic issues through this particular part of the village, especially with the junction of Whitecroft and Station Road. At present, this is a real cause of concern, along with the lack of a footway to access the railway bridge and local shops,” said the parish council.
The planning application will now go to South Cambridgeshire District Council for approval or refusal.
