Students make national final

Students made their way into the national finals of a competition after devising a project to help their peers save money on food.

The youngsters from Worcester College of Technology’s Students’ Union got through to the finals of the National Skills Academy for Financial Services Money For Life Challenge, which took place at Wembley Stadium at the end of May. They were one of only five teams to make it through from across the UK, following regional heats.

Their project, entitled E.A.T (Easy and Tasty) looked at ways in which students could save money on their food budgets. It looked at the importance of budgeting and responsible spending for students when making and buying food.

David Hull Blanshard, president of the Students’ Union, said: “The final at Wembley was very inspirational and the whole experience of working on the EAT campaign has been fantastic.

“Any campaign that involves us trying to save money and at the same time improving students health, is always a worthwhile endeavour.”

Students at the college were offered free food as an incentive for filling out a questionnaire about food budgeting and reading an information leaflet.

A total of 80 students were asked whether they were more likely to take a packed lunch to college after the project, and all answered yes.

A spokesperson for the Money For Life challenge said: “We received an overwhelming number of innovative and educational money management projects, with each making a tremendous impact on communities across the UK. Every team deserves to be congratulated for the incredible amount of work, energy and passion they have put into their projects.”
