Prime Minister at Village Wedding

Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife were guests of honour at a wedding on the outskirts of York.

Villagers in Sutton-on-the-Forest, just outside York, were thrilled when the PM, his wife Samantha and their children stopped to smile as they attended the wedding of Samantha’s half sister.

The Prime Minister even stopped to shake one boy’s hand as he carried his 14-month-old daughter Florence into the ceremony.

Residents were allowed to take photographs but there was a security team watching on.

The wedding of Lucy Mary Sheffield, 29, and Thomas Matthew Jackson, 32, took place at All Hallows Church.

It began to rain as the bride arrived at the church in a horse and carriage, and she had to shelter under an umbrella. The pageboys in the back of the carriage sang: “It’s raining, it’s pouring, the old man is snoring”. The Camerons’ eldest daughter, Nancy, seven, was also in the carriage.

Susan Fletcher, who was watching from outside the church with a crowd of residents, said she had enjoyed having the event in the village.

“It’s wonderful for the village. It’s just a really nice village occasion.”

The Camerons stayed the night at Sutton Park, the stately home owned by Samantha and Lucy’s father, Sir Reginald Sheffield. The wedding reception was also held at Sutton Park.

Lucy is a co-ordinator for the BBC’s programme The Culture Show, hosted by Alan Yentob, and Tom, works in television, setting up events such as Glastonbury for ITV and the BBC. The couple live in London.
