Schoolboys to carry Olympic Torch

Schoolboys from York have been chosen to carry the Olympic Torch.

Jamie Green, 17, a pupil at Bootham School, and George Conway, of Easingwold School, will each take the flame on a leg of its journey in June.

Jamie’s name was put forward for the honour by wheelchair charity Whizz-Kidz, which he does a lot of work for.

He said: “I think it was just because I represent Whizz-Kidz a lot at events locally and around the country.

“It is a privilege to act as a voice for disabled people not just in my area but around the country.”

He is a patron for the charity and has campaigned for it in the House of Commons, the House of Lords and at Downing Street in the past.

George, who is confined to a wheelchair by a rare muscular disease, was also nominated for the role by Whizz-Kidz.

He said: “I am overjoyed – this is an opportunity of a lifetime and I cannot wait for June 20.”

The torch will also be carried on a leg of its journey by Michael Dobson, 71, a former education officer for North Yorkshire County Council.

Michael, of South Kilvington near Thirsk, was chosen because of his work in the voluntary sector since retiring in 1995. He has donated many hours of time to Barnardos, the Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme, scouts, the Prince’s Trust, youth services, Connexions, St John’s Ambulance, local schools and community groups.

He said: “I am delighted to be part of the relay – it is a great honour and I am very proud, and lucky, to have been chosen.”
