Blooming success

The borough of Barnsley has shone once again in a competition for flowers and gardens.

Barnsley won 12 titles in the Yorkshire in Bloom awards, making it a success story for the second year running.

The borough held on to its Silver Gilt award in the City category as well as scooping a list of individual awards.

Judges visited the borough in the spring and summer and praised the hard work of council officers, individual community groups and schools and said “there is a strong sense of community pride wherever you go within the town”.

They congratulated the council on how well the landscape is managed during a very difficult financial climate and applauded officers and councillors for their positive commitment to the environment and to the public of Barnsley.

The judges also said their time in Barnsley this year had been thoroughly enjoyable.

Cllr Tim Cheetham, cabinet spokesperson, said: “Congratulations to everyone involved. Barnsley has a great community spirit and I’m glad this was recognised by the Yorkshire in Bloom judges.
