Children get website and university

Children in Barnsley have no reason for saying “I’m bored” thanks to a website and university scheme just for them.

The borough council’s things to do website is dedicated to young people in the borough and gives them details of local clubs, activities, youth centers, performing arts facilities, music, sports, places to go and more.

The site is split into two sections, one for children aged 12 and under and one for children aged 13 and over.

The facility, which is growing all the time, gives advice on how to join a band and information on things like where to find football, netball, brownies, scouts, martial arts, skating and BMX parks.

It also gives children tips on how to stay safe online, plus games and competitions.

The borough also has its own Children’s University, which was launched in the summer and is aimed at children aged between seven and 14.

The scheme is linked to the national Children’s University and aims to help young people to improve their own personal portfolios.

Everyone who takes part is given their own Passport to Learning. They then use this to collect learning credits every time they take part in registered out-of-school activities.

Children are encouraged to progress through the national certification scheme, based on their number of hours. Bronze, silver and gold certificates are awarded at CU Undergraduate, CU Postgraduate and CU Doctorate levels. Honorary certificates are also awarded for outstanding achievement and commitment. They can add these levels of achievement to their individual progress files.

All activities are designed to raise self-esteem and aspirations, as well as create a love for learning.
