Burnley residents are looking forward to getting a close look at the Olympic torch as it passes through the town next year. The Olympic flame will travel through the town on July 23 as part of its 70-day relay through the UK. More than 1,000 cities, towns and villages have been given a slot on the route, which will start at Land’s End, Cornwall, in May.

Spooky walk helps hospice
Hospice funds have been given a major boost thanks to a parade of spooky characters. A Halloween walk up Pendle Hill raised more than £10,000 for the Pendleside Hospice, in Burnley. More than 200 people dressed up as witches, vampires, zombies and other scary characters to take part in the event. The daytime trek ended with a pie and peas for all the participants at Barley Village Hall.

Six-year-old Adnan Ali has had his first taste of stardom after winning first prize in a national modelling competition. Adnan, of Burnley, was given the title of Master Supreme at the English Diamonds 2011 show in Manchester. The cheeky chap proved he was a natural on the catwalk by blowing a kiss to the judges during his performance.

Prince Charles praised regeneration work at Burnley’s Weavers’ Triangle during a visit to the town. The Prince of Wales said the area could be “really spectacular” and described plans for a multi-million pound regeneration as “a really valuable and far-sighted investment in the future of Burnley”. During his trip he had a look around the Sandygate Square area of the Weavers’ Triangle, which has been renovated by young people from the Prince’s Trust.

An Indian restaurant in Burnley has been named the best in the North West in a national competition. The Usha Indian, on Rossendale Road, was announced the winner of the title in the Asian Curry Awards in October. A glittering awards ceremony took place in London to mark the first year of the awards, which were set up to celebrate the greatest achievements of the UK’s Asian catering trade.
