Football Tournament Scores Well

Thousands of people turned up to see boys and girls taking part in an annual football tournament.

More than 5,000 people flocked to the Wyrley Juniors 14th annual tournament, which saw 1,500 players and 170 teams battling it out on the pitch over two days.

The tournament is held for players from six to 16 and includes teams from six counties in the region. The event needs 42 referees to oversee all the matches.

Keith Hardy, chairman of Wyrley Juniors FC, said: “The event is one of the largest tournaments in the Midlands and in its 14th year, with the format replicated by other clubs. There were winners from 13 different clubs in the competitions with the Under 7s and Under 8s teams enjoying the opportunity to play organised football.

“An army of club volunteers ensured that the event was again extremely successful and we now start the planning for next year when the dates will be the usual third weekend in June.”

The club said it was the most successful tournament they have ever had. The club, which has been running since 1982, has teams for girls and boys from Under 8s to Under 16s.

For tournament included a non-competitive section for under eights girls for the first time this year, in an aim to support Staffordshire FA’s diversity programme.

Mike Blundy, manager of Crewe FC Under 14s, said: “It was a fabulous day, we reached the final with one team and were knocked out in the quarters with another. What a fantastic competition Wyrley have – superbly organised, communication excellent, access, parking and facilities ideal.”
