A new Latin craze is sweeping the town of Cannock.
Hundreds of people took part in an open-air Zumba session in June and now hoards of people are flocking to the organised dance sessions at the town’s leisure centre.
Around 350 people took part in a free 90-minute Zumba session at Cannock Park, which was organised by Cannock Chase Council.
Two of the district’s leading Zumba instructors, Maggie Palmer and Scott James, put dancers through their paces, while the Latin music was provided by a Brazilian drumming band.
The event aimed to show how dance is a fun way to keep fit. Free oranges were handed out during the session to keep the dancers refreshed, and other forms of dance were showcased during the day.
Cllr Muriel Davis, Cannock Chase Council’s health and wellbeing portfolio holder, said: “One of the council’s key priorities is to help residents enjoy healthy and active lifestyles, and dance is a great way to get fit while having fun at the same time. There are a huge amount of classes taking place all over our district and the attendance at local Zumba classes is amazing.
“Zumba Fest was a huge success and it was great to see so many people taking part in Cannock Park. I hope that newcomers got a real taste for dance and will be signing up for dance and exercise classes.”
Zumba classes are now becoming popular at Cannock Chase Leisure Centre. The sessions take place on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons.
