Caring pupils have bought a cow for a village in Rwanda after learning about how difficult life is for the people who live there.
The youngsters from the P6 class at Troqueer School, in Dumfries, decided they just had to do something to help after learning about Africa during a visit from Reverend Billy Kelly, who has worked as a missionary in Rwanda.
The children started baking cakes, washing cars and other fundraising activities. They managed to collect a total of £672.83, which is enough to buy a cow for the village of Karenge.
It is not the first time the class has raised money for a good cause. The youngsters had already raised money to help build an orphanage in Malawi and had also raised money to buy a guitar for a boy in Karenge.
Class teacher Morag McCann said: “Everyone agreed that life in Africa is much harder than life in Dumfries. Starting with £1 each, we raised £672.83 in total.
“Some of us bought ingredients to bake cakes and biscuits which we sold. Others brought in buckets, sponges and soap to raise money by washing cars.
“We drew a treasure map with a hidden prize and sold the squares, and also made a wordsearch.”
Reverend Kelly paid another visit to the class to tell them how their fundraising had provided a cow for the village, which will produce milk daily. In the future its calves could also be sold to make money for the villagers.
