Councillors Talk About the Haven Of Haverhill

New town councillors have spoken about what they love about Haverhill.

Roger André and his daughter-in-law Diana André are two of the new faces to be elected onto the council.

Roger said: “I love all the country walks, especially the railway walk, and all the country parks as well.

“I like the peaceful and quiet nature of the place generally, and also the sense of community, now that I know all the people here.”

Diana, who moved to the town four years ago from London, said: “I love that Haverhill is a town that is growing and changing, and has a good community spirit that is vibrant with great potential for growth.

“As a young family we have found it a safe place to live, it is close to some beautiful countryside, has excellent schools, good shopping and recreational facilities, a modern leisure centre, a cinema, restaurants as well as a community spirit.”

Another new member, Ernie Goody, has lived in the town since 1975, and said he has always felt safe in the area.

He said: “I’ve never considered moving anywhere else as it’s friendly here, it’s comfortable and safe – there’s a lot of things that need doing but compared to some places it’s marvellous.

“You can walk out at night without much fear of being attacked at all.”

Cllr Graham Brandejs said he liked the town’s sense of its own identity. He added: “We came from London where one district merges into another, but that doesn’t happen here, and areas didn’t have their own separate identity like I think Haverhill has.

“Haverhill has got facilities like the leisure centre and cinema, the arts centre, and the friendliness of people is noticeable.”
