Children were everywhere for diamond duo

Five children, 19 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 130 foster children have kept Mary and Eric Whybrow busy during 60 years of marriage.

The diamond wedding couple, from Kedington, certainly had no shortage of people to help them celebrate their big day in March.

Mary, 81, and Eric, 83, had four children of their own John, 58, Kevin, 57, Carole Carr, 55, and Sarah Trott, 45, and also raised Vincent Lee, 49, who they consider as one of their own.

Mary said: “I remember wanting to go back to work but wouldn’t because I wouldn’t leave my kids, so when I saw fostering advertised on TV I thought ‘I could do that’.

“Some kids I had for a few days, some for weeks, some for months and some for over a year. We had all ages – the youngest was four days old and just out of hospital and the oldest was 17.

“At one time we had five fostered children and four of our own living with us. I don’t know how we did it but it was lovely.

“We laughed a lot and cried a lot because when some of them left we didn’t know if they were going to good places.”

Eric said: “Fostering helped our own children as they learned that others weren’t as well off as them.

“We have had our ups and downs but always got on well together – a lot of people may say they’ve never had an argument but that’s a lie, and we’ve had many!”
