Marathon runners tot up totals

Haverhill residents have collected thousands of pounds between them for charity.

Runners from the town took part in the London Marathon to raise the cash for different causes and have been totting up their totals.

Martin Balmer, a duty manager at Sainsbury’s in Haverhill, ran the April event with his son John to raise a total of £2, 800 for the FSID (Foundation for the study of Infant Death).

He said: “Nothing could dampen the sheer emotions, atmosphere, sights and sounds of the day.

“We helped each other round and although it was not important, were happy with our finishing times.”

Personal trainer Ryan Holder, from Haverhill, raised £2,200 for the Association of International Cancer Research. Ryan, who had to walk the last two miles, said: “I definitely want to do it again and try to complete the race properly.”

A total of 16 runners from the Haverhill Running Club took part in the marathon including Kim Gregory, 50, who raised £600 for the British Heart Foundation in memory of her dad, who died from a heart attack.

Another running club member, Shirley Fowler, raised £500 for Breast Cancer Care and Action Ducheene, a charity supporting people with muscular dystrophy.

Lisa Patterson, who grew up in Great Thurlow but now lives in Drinkstone, raised more than £1,000 for the Prostate Cancer Charity in memory of her late dad David Atherton, who died of the disease.

She said: “I was amazing. I’m just amazed at myself with the determination I had to get round without walking.”
