Buttermarket shopping centre could include new cinema

A new multi-screen cinema could be coming to Ipswich as part of a major redevelopment of the town’s Buttermarket Centre. Nationwide cinema chain Vue is thought to be in talks with the owners of the old TJ Hughes department store into a cinema. However, neither the centre nor Vue will confirm or deny that the deal was under discussion.

Donation from university history graduate who lost battle with cancer

University Campus Suffolk has been left a significant donation by a former history student. Sally Williams passed away in 2010 and has left a legacy fund to the history department. The money will be used to “enhance the experience of current students”, the university has said.

Nearly £1,000 raised at auction for picture postcards

A series of historical postcards and photographs taken in a bygone era have been auctioned off for nearly £1,000. The images depict Suffolk across the decades and date as far back as wartime in the 1930s and 1940s. The pictures give an insight into what the area was like during those days.

250th birthday of Margaret Catchpole Celebrated

The story of local legend Margaret Catchpole is still as popular in Suffolk as ever as we celebrate her 250th birthday. Events have been held throughout the area to commemorate the life of horse-thief and jail-breaker Margaret Catchpole who is said to have once rode bareback from Nacton to Ipswich in order to fetch a doctor for her seriously ill mistress.

Rhino Rosie gets a falsie!

It seems that it’s not just humans that are keen on a bit of cosmetic enhancement; rhinos are getting in on the act too! Rosie the Rhino has had her horn replaced after it was stolen last year and it has now been replaced with a glass fibre horn that will be no use in any medicines.

Primary school and college both awarded gongs for having high standards of food

Many people don’t have nice things to say about their school dinners, but that cannot be said for the pupils at Sidegate Lane Primary School. The staff at the school have been praised for the quality of the food that they serve, a world away from the typical soggy vegetables and lumpy mash.

Abseiling Bridges The Age Gap

A six-year-old boy and an 85-year-old man were among the fundraisers to abseil down the side of a maternity block in aid of charity. Luke Free, six, was the youngest person to ever scale down the side of the building at Ipswich Hospital. He wore a Spiderman outfit and had his mum by his side the whole way down.
