Primary school and college both awarded gongs for having high standards of food

Many people don’t have nice things to say about their school dinners, but that cannot be said for the pupils at Sidegate Lane Primary School.

The staff at the school have been praised for the quality of the food that they serve, a world away from the typical soggy vegetables and lumpy mash.

They have received a five-rating by the borough council’s environmental health team.

The council has adopted the Food Standards Agency’s rating system which hates takeways, restaurants and schools on their food hygiene standards.

A governor of the school, Councillor Alasdair Ross,  said that the good news had acted as a great boost for the school community.

He said: “Our staff in our kitchen have always done their utmost to provide fantastic food for both staff and pupils, so it is great they have achieved top marks for food hygiene.”

Another school governor, Councillor Judy Terry, said: “Introducing young people to good, healthy food at an early stage is essential to their future wellbeing in so many ways and this has been a priority at the school for many years. Top marks are well deserved and I congratulate the head and the whole catering team.”

Suffolk New College in Ipswich has also been awarded with five stars.

Principal Professor Dave Muller said: “Our students are the chefs of the future. They have learnt to maintain high standards and will take them into the hospitality industry.”

Lord Rooker, the Chairman of the Food Standards Agency, is coming to Ipswich to meet with more than 100 delegates that have been praised for their standards.
