Work has started on a new education academy for Kidderminster.
The Academy at Kidderminster is being built in the Piano Building at Weavers Wharf and is due to open in September.
The restoration of one of the town’s landmarks began in April as a joint project between Birmingham Metropolitan College and Kidderminster College.
The five-storey building, which is around 145 years old, is being transformed by Thomas Vale Construction, of Stourport.
Thomas Vale group managing director Tony Hyde said: “As a local contractor, we are extremely excited to be part of such an amazing project for future generations of the region.
“We are looking forward to a long and continuing relationship with the two colleges, ensuring localised procurement targets, economic and social sustainability.”
The academy will take around 1,000 students and will offer courses in subjects such as computer games development, fashion design and retail, a Samsung experience academy, 3D animation and electronics, food preparation and hospitality. There will also be a cafeteria on the site.
Kidderminster College principal Andy Dobson said: “The facilities will be truly outstanding and will provide a huge creative and cultural boost to the area, which will benefit students, the community, new media entrepreneurs and businesses.”
Christine Braddock, Birmingham Metropolitan College principal, said the academy would provide a “vibrant learning space”.
The Piano Building started its life in 1867 as a warehousing unit for Brintons Carpets. Its name comes from the fact that its curved side resembles a grand piano.
