Penguin feeding is a hit

Lucky children were given a chance to feed the penguins for the first time during the Easter holidays at the West Midland Safari Park.

Children were allowed to take part in the feeding sessions twice a day at the new Penguin Cove exhibit at the park.

Ten pots of fish were available on a first come, first served basis at the feeding sessions. Visitors not taking part were still able to watch the fun and learn a bit more about the Humboldt penguins at the cove.

Other activities on offer included a Pingu ride; penguin inspired games and crafts, and penguin shaped sweets and gingerbread.

Young park reporter Joe Powner, 10, was one of those lucky enough to take part in the feeding sessions.

He said: “I heard about the new penguin exhibit at the safari park. Later that day I was asked to go and see the penguins, feed them and write a report about them. Of course I said yes.

“The next day my dad took me to the safari park and quickly rushed me to the penguin cove. As soon as I got there I adored the sight I saw.”

Joe said he enjoyed the experience so much that he now wants to work with penguins when he grows up.

The new Penguin Cove was set up at a cost of £500,000. It is situated in the park’s discovery trail area. The penguin feeds took place every day during the school holidays at 12.30pm and 2.30pm.
