Students give birds a new home

Plenty of birds had a new home to go to this winter thanks to a project between students and the council.

A group of students at Kidderminster College decided they wanted to put up bird boxes in the town’s Brinton Park, in an aim to attract more wildlife and more visitors.

The full time students, who have learning difficulties, are on the second year of a City and Guilds qualification in employability and personal development. They needed to complete a community project as part of their course.

The group made the bird boxes during their woodwork lesson, and then called on Wyre District Council to help them with the rest.

Student Tamsin Shaw, said: “We wanted to attract more visitors and residents to Brinton Park to see the wildlife here, so we came up with the idea of putting up bird boxes.

“The project has been good because we have been working in teams and it has really shown us what a difference team work can make too.”

Five boxes have now been put up in the trees at the top of the path from the main Sutton Road entrance.

Cllr Tracey Onslow, Wyre Forest District Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for community wellbeing, said: “This is another great example of how we’ve been working in partnership to bring benefits to all.

“The students have got a lot out of the project and thanks to them the park now has new bird boxes.

“We too hope they will attract visitors of both the human and feathered variety!”
