Harewood

Harewood House has many levels. It is a visitor attraction, a site of historical importance, home to the Queen’s cousin the Earl of Harewood and the Countess of Harewood, an important site for wildlife, a museum for art and a host to many public events. Among its titles are Enjoy England’s Large Visitor Attraction of the Year 2009 and Yorkshire in Bloom Gold Award winner 2010.

Harewood has many significant art collections and regularly has exhibitions in many of its rooms. Historic watercolours from JMW Turner are among the works at the site. Modern art is also displayed in the galleries. Furniture by Thomas Chippendale and collections of porcelain are among Harewood’s collections.

Anyone wanting to spot a bit of wildlife will not be disappointed on a trip to Harewood. One of its attractions is a flock of Humboldt Penguins in a specially designed enclosure in the Bird Garden. There is even an opportunity to help the keepers feed these penguins. Other birds to catch a glimpse of at Harewood are Red Kites, Chilean Flamingos and Owls.

The huge adventure playground at Harewood is always popular and includes a zipwire, swings and slides, aerial walkways and climbing nets. Another attraction for the children is the Geopods, containing toys and activities for hands-on learning and fun.

The list of events taking place every year at Harewood House is extensive. Some of the highlights are the Yorkshire Game Fair, a Kite Festival, open air concerts, a car rally and craft fairs.
