Nigel Carden, headteacher at Beverley School for Autism has been nominated at this year’s North East School Awards for his “fantastic” work.

Mr. Carden has been nominated as Headteacher of the Year by the mum of one of his pupils.

Gillian Smith, who is the mother of 13-year-old Craig Roberts, was full of praise for Mr. Carden.

“Nigel is a fantastic headteacher and deserves to be recognised for all the hard work and dedication to his job. He supports parents and pupils and always makes time to help in any way he can.

“Craig has known Nigel for years and has a lot of faith in him.

“With it being a special school Craig needs a lot of reassurance, lots of children there do, and Nigel is always fantastic.

“Nothing is too much trouble, there’s nothing he can’t try and sort out. He drops everything.”

The Beverley School for Autism was opened last spring and has providing a lot of new opportunities for youngsters. The Specialist Technology School was built with a donation from Middlesbrough Council’s multi-million pound Building Schools for the Future programme.

The school’s site in Saltersgill is shared with Prince Bishop School.

The Beverley School teaches children between three and 19 years old who have autism.

The children begin in nursery on the ground floor and then work their way up to the sixth form on the top floor.
