Former Wolverton pupils enjoyed sharing school memories from fifty years ago when they met for a school reunion.
All of the attendees boarded at Wolverton House, once part of Radcliffe School between the years of 1955 and 1962.
“It was a unique boarding facility and at any one time there were only about 23 of us,” said Jill Schumacher (nee Oram).
“Dormitories were very frugal with iron bedsteads and little else in the rooms. It was run like a tightly knit family and we all became very close because of the unusual situation we found ourselves in.”
Boarders were looked after by Mr and Mrs Charles Hodge, until the couple moved to France.
“They both had a great impact on our childhoods and many of us stayed in contact and visited them regularly throughout their life,” said Jill.
The former boarders visited the site of the boarding house, which is now a carvery restaurant. Attendees at the reunion included Jill Schumacher, Bonnie Russell (nee Sills), Jackie Mari (nee Carlisle), Paddy Ford (nee Greening), Patricia White (nee Knight), Michael Stevens (Big Biff), Graham Stevens (Little Biff), Derrick Painter, Richard Mayne (Dick), John King, John Keller and Brian Lee.
“Some of us had not met for around 50 years. It was a very special occasion and so many amusing anecdotes were exchanged,” said Jill. If you were a boarder at Wolverton House and would like to get in touch with Jill, email her at jilly.schumacher@virgin.net
