Tram brings jobs

Scores of people are being recruited for new jobs after final permission was given for Nottingham’s new tram lines to be built.

An initial 70 new jobs have been created after the government signed off the project to build two new tram lines to extend Nottingham’s tram network to Clifton via Wilford (Line Two) and Chilwell via Beeston (Line Three).

Recruitment for the jobs is taking place between January and March and vacancies include reception staff, office assistants, training and research managers, engineers, quantity surveyors and site foremen.

Council leader Jon Collins said: “NET Phase Two will generate construction work opportunities for local companies and people, as well as stimulating the local economy to generate long term employment growth.

“In a time of such economic constraints and few job opportunities, it is great to be advertising such a large quantity of jobs so soon after getting the final permission to build the two new tram lines.

“The project will boost the local economy, and these jobs represent the start of the economic growth, inward investments and regeneration which we know building new tram lines brings.”

He said the council was very keen to fill the vacancies with local people, adding: “I would encourage anyone who is looking for work from Nottingham and Nottinghamshire to take a look at the opportunities that are available.”

Roger Harrison, chairman of Tramlink Nottingham, which has been awarded the contract to build and operate the extended network and run the operation of the existing tram line, said: “It is obviously excellent news that these early job opportunities are being created.”
