Up to 125 jobs will be created by power firm Alstom after the company landed a major new contract.
Alstom will create the new jobs after being awarded a new £200m contract by a utility company from Sweden.
Alstom, based in Lichfield Road, announced the expansion after it was chosen to design and manufacture high voltage electricity gear by Svenska Kraftnat.
This deal means that dozens of skill workers are needed to assist with the project that is due to be completed at the end of 2014.
Commercial Vice President, Kevin Marriott, said: “This is another great local engineering story for Alstom in Staffordshire and is part of Alstom’s strategic development as a world leader in this highly advanced technology. It all comes down to the engineering skills we have in Stafford through our highly skilled and competent local workforce.
“This contract award will create new jobs and secure existing ones for the future. The project reinforces the importance of our graduate and technicians apprenticeships and ongoing training programmes that we are proud to provide in Stafford.”
The company will be helping Sweden integrate more renewable energy into its electricity grid and to improve its network’s reliability as part of the project.
It will connect Hurva in southern Sweden to Barkeryd in central Sweden.
Jeremy Lefroy, MP for Stafford, said: “The energy industry is growing in the developed world and companies like Alstom are very well placed to take advantage. I’m delighted with this announcement. Stafford is really holding its own economically because we are industrially based. It really shows the need for Stafford to have plenty of skilled workers.”
