Appeal For Torch Nominations

Stafford residents are being urged to nominate local people to be Olympic torch bearers, in an aim to get the flame to pass through the town.

Stafford Borough Council is still appealing to Olympic organisers in a bid to get the torch in the town, but more nominations are needed to help the cause.

It is hoping the bid will be helped if lots of worthy people from the town have been put forward as candidates to carry the flame on a leg of its journey.

Olympic organisers are looking for people from all walks of life – many of whom are unsung heroes. It can be coaches, parents, teachers, charity fundraisers or those who have battled against adversity.

Councillor Mike Smith, deputy leader and cabinet member for leisure on Stafford Borough Council, said: “We want loads of people to get nominating as this will send a powerful message to the Games Committee that Stafford Borough is packed with worthy candidates who deserve a chance of being a torch bearer and carrying the flame through our area.

“I’d urge everyone to use the opportunity and put someone forward who deserves more recognition for what they do – often without any rewards.”

Stafford’s five time Olympian Alison Williamson, who is hoping to make London 2012 her sixth consecutive games, said: “The Olympic flame is an iconic symbol and to have it paraded through our town on its way to London would be an amazing experience.

“I am sure everyone will want to be involved so please get those nominations in and demonstrate to the UK how much we want the torch coming to our area.”
