Student wins national award

Uxbridge College student Sabyha Khan is celebrating after winning a national award for student of the year. The 18-year-old was announced the winner of the Association of Colleges Student of the Year Awards, which recognises exceptional students from colleges across the UK. The awards, given to students for their remarkable personal achievements, were presented at AoC’s Annual Conference in Birmingham. Winners must have made a significant contribution to college life or their local community, and have inspired others.

Family lives in hemp house

A Hillingdon family are living in a house made of hemp after designing the eco friendly building with the council. The home, in Mulberry Crescent, has been designed and built to be suitable for a resident with disabilities and to help the environment. The building was constructed using Hemcrete, a blend of a lime based binder and hemp, which absorbs CO2. It also has solar panels to heat water and extensive insulation, which means it emits 100 per cent less …

Girl’s drawing comes to life

Youngster Cerys Newman saw her drawing come to life after winning a competition to design a road safety mascot. Cerys, 10, now regularly sees her character Fred the Penguin walking around the borough after coming first in the competition by Hillingdon Council. The pupil of Sacred Heart Primary School, in Ruislip, was one of 425 children to take part in the competition.

Ice rink gets bigger this year

The Christmas open-air ice rink in Uxbridge was made even bigger this winter because it is so popular. The rink, outside the Civic Centre, was a third bigger than previous years and attracted hundreds of visitors every day. It was the fourth year the rink had been provided in the town centre to coincide with festive celebrations.
