Girl’s drawing comes to life

Youngster Cerys Newman saw her drawing come to life after winning a competition to design a road safety mascot.

Cerys, 10, now regularly sees her character Fred the Penguin walking around the borough after coming first in the competition by Hillingdon Council.

The pupil of Sacred Heart Primary School, in Ruislip, was one of 425 children to take part in the competition.

Cerys said she designed a penguin because she “likes penguins and thought it would be cool to have a lollipop penguin”.

Fred has already started attending events in the borough and visiting children to promote road safety.

Cllr Keith Burrows, cabinet member for planning, transportation and recycling, said: “I’m delighted that so many children entered the competition, and there were so many fantastic designs it was difficult to choose.

“However Fred the Penguin was a worthy winner and I’ve no doubt he will play a part in the council’s work in promoting safety to our younger residents on their journey to and from school.”

Top prize in the competition was a scooter, donated by cycle storage company, Cyclepods Ltd, which sponsored the event. Cyclepods encourage safe and sustainable travel in schools.

There were also nine runners-up in the competition: Lily White, Kadeja Johnson, Jodie Thompson, Harrison Deas, Jade Hampton, Grace Amber Kipling, Milly Dalton, Hannah Marie and Samuel Wilthire.

The council also runs the Children’s Traffic Club, an award-winning road safety club for children aged three and four. The programme teaches children and their carers how to keep safe, in a fun and memorable way.
