Taxi tractor is heading for Barcelona

An old Metro taxi disguised as a tractor may not be the usual choice for a 1,300-mile drive, but it is the choice of mechanic Jonathan Upchurch for the Barcelona Bangers competition.

Jonathan will be joined by Alan Stimpson, Jherek Upchurch and Joshua Harlock for the event and they will drive through France, over the Alps, along the Riviera and on to Barcelona all to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The journey must be completed in a car that is worth less than £250 and Jonathan found his unusual choice on eBay.

He said: “We’ve got an old Metro cab that came from Doncaster, which has done 326,000 miles. It will be the second highest mileage car that has done it.

“Being Fenland lads, we also thought we would make it look like a tractor.”

John Deere tractor equipment has been donated by Anker of Coates and they are completing the makeover with paint and stickers.

Charitable Jonathan, who runs Jonathan Upchurch Vehicle Repairs in March, said: “I was flicking through the Internet and I came across the Barcelona Bangers. I just thought I wouldn’t mind having a go at it.

“It looks like good fun and we’ve serviced the car so it should make it. It’s certainly something different!”

Over 80 teams will compete in the Barcelona Bangers contest in June.

They have already raised £300 for Macmillan. If you would like to support them then pick up your sponsorship form from Jonathan’s garage or March Quality Meats, in High Street.
