Money raised for hospital with river walk

A brave five year old from Chelmsford who has fought cancer walked more than 12 miles to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). William Lancaster walked along the River Chelmer and raised thousands of pounds for the hospital after he received the all clear from Burkitt’s lymphoma.

William wanted to raise money for the hospital that saved his life. Over 150 people walked with him on the lovely walk between Chelmsford and Heybridge Basin, while some opted for the shorter walk from Paper Mill Lock to Maldon.

Justin Lancaster, William’s Dad said: “Great Ormond Street is such a special place, full of lots of special people and they looked after our special man.

“When we came out of hospital in November, they had been so good to us, not just William, but all the family, looking after us and making him better. We felt we ought to try to give something back.

“The walk started off as something so small, but to get the whole community involved, friends and family, is amazing.

“We also had a lot of helpers. People who couldn’t walk that far but asked us how they could help.”

William was diagnosed with cancer last July and was rushed to Great Ormond Street for the specialist care that he needed for the rare blood cancer.

After a hard struggle, William is cancer free.

“Thanks to the medical and nursing staff at Great Ormond Street and William’s unrelenting fight the cancer has gone,” said Justin.
