Otters get their own heated pool

Otters have been given their own heated pool in their plush new home at Colchester Zoo. Otter Creek has been officially opened at the zoo for a group of six smooth-coated otters. The only other places these otters can be seen are Belfast Zoo and the Rare Species Conservation Centre in Kent.

Fisherman wowed by public support

A fisherman who nearly drowned when his boat sank says he has been overwhelmed by the public support since the drama. Kevin Hughes, 31, owner of Hughes’ Fish in Head Street, Colchester, says business has been booming since the incident in which he nearly died. He says members of the public have also been offering him money.

Town’s firefighters join New York memorial day

A memorial plaque from Colchester Town Hall was taken to America by a group of the town’s firefighters to mark the anniversary of 9/11. The group of firefighters travelled to Ground Zero to pay their respects to friends and comrades who died in the terror attacks 10 years ago.

Sporting hero is announced for Olympics

Colchester sporting hero Hannah Stodel is chuffed to be one of the first athletes announced for London 2012. The British Paralympic Association (BPA) has chosen Hannah to represent Britain in the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Her name was among the very first to be officially selected.

TV show records Venezuelan Olympian visit

Colchester welcomed a very special visitor when the first Venezuelan athlete to compete in the Olympics spent a day in the town. Julio César León, 86, took part in the London Olympic Games in 1948 and was the first athlete from his country to compete in the event.
