Work is about to begin on replacing the lighting currently used in Durham Cathedral and Castle. The current lighting system was put in place during the 1960s and as a result is in need of updating.
The lightening system that will replace them is designed to be more economically friendly and lower the city’s carbon footprint as well as being able to be raised or dimmed on demand.
Even though the cost is expected to be around the region of £430,000 the city council believes that it will be well worth the cost.
Councillor Bob Young, the council’s cabinet member for environment and leisure, said: “Over the next two years, this project will make a significant difference to the look of Durham’s evening skyline”
AK lighting, the company responsible for implementing the new system, states that they will do everything possible to keep disruption to a minimum.
