135-mile trek attempted by walkers

Twelve walkers are planning to walk from Durham to Holy Island in a journey that will cover a distance of 135 miles and will be known as the Cafod Big Walk. The trek is being undertaken to celebrate the 25th year anniversary of the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD).

The age of the “pilgrims” spans from 28 to over 70 and they are expected to cover a distance of around 15 miles a day. One of the members of the group Pete Donaghy says: “I realise that some people have to cover that on a daily basis just to get water or go to school. It will be tough but thoughts like that will encourage us.”When they reach the coast they will be joined by over 400 Cafod supporters who will walk with them on the final leg of the journey.
