A celebration of Durham

Toys, food and wedding stationary were just some of the items on display at a day to celebrate things made in Durham.

The Made in Durham exhibition was held in Durham County Hall to give local manufacturers a chance to show off their work.

More than 30 businesses took the opportunity to display at the event, which was organised by Durham County Council chairman Dennis Morgan.

Cllr Morgan said: “County Durham has a number of companies from micro businesses to world-class manufacturers who have made the county their home and who continue to produce their products here.

“I received favourable comments from every stand I visited. I’m now looking into making this an annual event, as promoting County Durham and the high quality products we make here is something I am very passionate about.

“For example, how many people know that the roof of King’s Cross Station and the visitor centre at the Olympic Park in London were both made by County Durham companies?

“We’ve got to get out there and blow our own trumpets and let people know that this is what we do in County Durham, and that we do it very well.”

Among the companies to take part were engineering firms, wedding stationery designers, hand-made wooden toy manufacturers and food manufacturers.

Exhibitor John Spensley, of Aycliffe Fabrications, in Newton Aycliffe, said: “A lot of people have been excited about this event. We’ve been waiting for something like this to come along and showcase what is excellent about what we make in County Durham.”
