Excitement over Olympic relay

Excitement is building in Hertford following the announcement of the Olympic Torch relay route.

The torch will be carried through the town on July 7 and residents are being encouraged to line the streets to cheer it on.

The flame will travel along the A414 London Road and into Fore Street just after 10am then along Market Street, Railway Street, South Street and back onto Fore Street before the torch is taken along the A119 Ware Road to Cockbush Avenue.

The convoy will then be driven to Hertford Regional College just after 10.30am before being carried over the railway crossing onto Amwell End, the High Street, Watton Road and onto Westmill Road until its junction with Wengeo Way. It will arrive in Bishop’s Stortford just after 11am.

East Herts District Council is planning to put up bunting and banners to welcome the torch into the area.

East Herts Council chairman Suzanne Rutland-Barsby said: “The excitement is certainly building and we’re looking forward to welcoming the Olympic Torch to our district. At the same time we want everyone to enjoy the relay so please make sure you follow our advice about which roads to avoid driving down.”

Residents are being advised to leave their cars at home during the morning of the event, as roads will be closed and parked cars will be moved if they cause an obstruction.

The council is also offering grants of up to £300 for residents wanting to organise a street party to mark the Olympic Games.
