Teenagers have given a massive thumbs-up to a new extreme sports facility in their town.
XC is a new sports and youth centre at Hemel Hempstead’s Jarman Park, and is the only centre of its kind in the UK.
The facility, opened in September, includes a state-of-the-art skatepark, climbing and caving facilities, a music recording studio, a band rehearsal room, a cafe and a teen-focused health centre with counselling rooms.
The skatepark has been designed for BMX, skateboarding, scooters and blading and is the only one in the UK with an indoor concrete pool and bowl. As well as the 5ft to 8ft pool and 5ft to 9ft bowl, the park includes wooden ramps and obstacles that can be changed over time. The facility was designed after consultations with a steering group of local young people, along with professional skaters and BMXers.
Nickye Farenden, 18, from XC’s Youth Shadow Management Board, said: “We can confidently say we have had a voice and all our views have been taken on board. This building is a key demonstration that the young people of Dacorum have been listened to.”
Sam, 15, said: “This is a fantastic facility for the whole community and will provide a perfect area for skateboarders, BMX’ers etc to practice and progress in their respective sports. The whole building will provide enjoyment for decades to come.”
Councillor Andrew Williams, Leader of Dacorum Borough Council, said: “We’ve been working together for two years to develop this truly extraordinary, top-class centre. It is providing a hub for young people, superb opportunities for our local community and is putting Hemel Hempstead firmly on the map.”
