A youngster who hopes to be a lorry driver like his dad has won a writing competition for an essay about his ambitions.
James Hawkes, a pupil at Westfield Primary School, may now have to choose between writing and driving after being named the winner of the Rotary Club of Hoddesdon’s annual essay competition.
Pupils from across the borough were challenged to write under the heading of What I Want To Do When I Grow Up. Many young people took part in the competition and James’s work was chosen from piles of essays.
A prize ceremony was then held at Hoddesdon Library at the end of March to announce the winners.
Rotarian Lindsay Jones said: “This year’s winner was James Hawkes from Westfield Primary School, whose ambition is to be a lorry driver like his father and who wrote an excellent essay which showed not only his ambition but also the fact that he had gone into the details of the job and was already saving for his own lorry.”
Broxbourne Mayor Eddy Rowland and the president of Hoddesdon Rotary Club Roger Merton handed James his winning certificate at the ceremony. The event was also attended by 80 parents, teachers and James’s family.
Mr Jones added: “Roger thanked the library, teachers and, of course, most of all the children for attending the event, and the evening closed with the mayor saying how impressed he had been with the event and the fact that so many young people had taken part.”
