Excitement is building at the Lee Valley White Water Centre as the Olympic Games draw nearer.
The Borough of Broxbourne Council is organising a programme of free events in the run-up to 2012, from art and sports competitions to a Games-related exhibition at Hoddesdon’s Lowewood Museum.
The council is also putting plans in place to make sure Olympic events at the centre go without a hitch.
The council, alongside The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG), is encouraging spectators to use public transport to get to the centre, in an aim to cause minimal disruption to local residents.
Broxbourne Council said it aims to use the London 2012 Games to encourage more people across the borough to take part in sporting activities. It also hopes the new facilities at Lee Valley will also improve the environment of the Waltham Cross area
After the Games, the council plans to establish the centre as a major visitor attraction, bringing more tourists into the region.
Cllr Paul Mason, leader of the council, said: “2012 is going to be a very exciting year for the Borough of Broxbourne. Our main priorities are to ensure the Games cause minimum disruption so that business can continue as usual and the local community to feel part of and enjoy what is going to be an unforgettable event.”
The centre is also playing host to the Olympic Torch, which will be carried down a section of the course on July 7.
Shaun Dawson, chief executive of Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, said: “This is a great opportunity to shine a spotlight on the centre as an Olympic venue and the water sports that are available to the public to come and try including rafting, canoeing and kayaking.”
