Boys praised for helping pensioner

A group of three boys have been praised for coming to the rescue of a pensioner who had slipped while out walking her dogs.

The boys, who have not been named, called the alarm when they discovered Rose McDonald, who had slipped on an icy bank near Kinghorn Lifeboat Station. She had fallen around four metres down the grassy slope and broken her ankle.

The lads, aged 12 and 13, were walking from Kirkcaldy to Aberdour when they heard Rose’s cries for help. They called Liz Davidson, the lifeboat’s deputy launching authority, who was walking to the station nearby. She was then able to call for an ambulance and look after Rose with other lifeboat crew until the ambulance arrived.

Rose’s niece Rhona Seath said afterwards: “In this day and age many youngsters would just keep on going, but these boys stopped to help. If they hadn’t done so she could have lain there a lot longer and would maybe not be making as good a recovery as she is.

“She has undergone an operation to fit two steel plates in her ankle after breaking it in two places, and is expected to be in hospital until the end of the week.”

Liz Davidson added: “Three young boys, who were out walking, shouted to me and I immediately called an ambulance and called the lifeboat crew who were gathering at the station.

“I would like to thank the boys, who were a great help during this incident, which must have been frightening for the lady.”
