Children to get new school

Children in Lincoln are set to get a new primary school on an old football training ground.

Lincolnshire County Council has announced plans to build a school for 210 children at the former Lincoln City FC training ground at Carlton Boulevard.

The school is needed for children living in the nearby housing developments off Wolsey Way and Carlton Boulevard. Children living in this area currently have to travel to outlying village schools.

The council is proposing to open the new school in 2013 to cope with the increasing demand for primary places in the area. Temporary measures had to be taken to create extra places in other schools in 2011 and 2012.

Patricia Bradwell, executive councillor for children’s services, said: “This is excellent news for education in Lincoln. The council is committed to providing enough places for the growing number of children coming into primary schools and responding to the needs of young people.

“With an increase in the birth rate and new housing developments, our county is experiencing the same demographic pressures in some areas as is happening nationally. In recent years we have effectively planned for sufficient school places in Lincoln but we have now reached the stage where we need a new school for additional places beyond 2012.”

The school will consist of seven classrooms, a hall and an outside playground, and will be run as an academy.

Local resident and parent Rachel Banks, 34, said: “I know that many of our neighbours have sent their children to some of the village schools, such as Cherry Willingham or Reepham, but with more and more houses being built they eventually won’t be able to cope with the demand.”
