More people have been getting on their bikes in Middlesbrough thanks to a new state-of-the-art cycle circuit in the town.
The £700,000 cycle track at Prissick Sports Hub, Marton Road, has made it easier and safer for cyclists of all ages and abilities to enjoy the sport.
The 1km tarmac track is six metres wide and is enclosed with a fence. It also has street lighting and a clubhouse with toilets. It has been designed so cyclists can choose a shorter loop option as well.
Members of the public can use the track and it can also be hired by groups or clubs. Certain times slots are allocated for adult use only, while other time slots are reserved for family use.
The project was funded by British Cycling, the Middlesbrough Healthy Town programme and NHS Middlesbrough.
Councillor Brenda Thompson, member for public health and sport, said: “The Middlesbrough Cycle Circuit is a wonderful facility for use by cyclists of all abilities. It will really contribute to helping make the people of Middlesbrough enjoy cycling and get more healthy and active.
“This project has been a very successful partnership and will be a great physical legacy for the Middlesbrough Healthy Town programme.”
Ian Drake, chief executive of British Cycling, said: “The new facility at Prissick represents a major development in our efforts to bring excellent modern cycling facilities to communities across Britain at a time when cycling is booming and the demand for venues to enjoy the sport is higher than ever before.”
