Active Norfolk’s Adult Disability Games attended by Olympic medallist Gail Emms

Hundreds of people in Norfolk, including an Olympic medallist attended an event which promoted disability sport opportunities in the area.

The fourth annual Adult Disability Games was organised by Active Norfolk and held at the Sportspark at the University of East Anglia.

More than 200 adults with disabilities joined in and took part in a wide range of sports including gymnastics, golf, archery and volleyball.

Gail Emms former world badminton champion was also there to offer support. Gail won silver in the badminton mixed doubles in Athens and retired from the sport after Beijing. She said: “I’m really passionate about sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Games and from the start of this year, there’s been a real buzz about them.

“What’s been apparent is the interest and support for the Paralympics. It’s great to see how disability sport has come on. Sport should be fun and you really sense that here.

“There’s the ethos of being the best you can be and you don’t know what you’re good at unless you try it, and it’s been fantastic to see today how enthusiastic everyone has been.”

The event aims to provide a fun and safe sporting festival for adults who have physical and/or learning disabilities.

There are qualified coaches on hand over the two day events and there are 18 different sports for the 16 to 75 years olds to try.

Ellen Vanlint, from Active Norfolk, said: “It’s been a really good day with lots going on and lots of smiles on people’s faces.

“It’s been great having Gail here, it’s really made it a great day.”
