Pupils sing with Prince Edward

Schoolchildren enjoyed singing a nursery rhyme with Prince Edward when he turned up to open a new community centre.

The Earl of Wessex officially opened the new £15 million St Ann’s Valley Centre in Nottingham at the end of May.

He sang Baa Baa Black Sheep with pupils from Sycamore Primary School as he walked around the centre, before meeting with local residents and centre users.

Pupils from Nottingham Academy were also lucky enough to meet the prince when they served up refreshments during the opening ceremony.

Kirsty Thorpe, 16, of Lenton, said she was the first person in her family to meet a member of the royal family. She said: “What an experience to get to see him. My mum thinks it’s amazing.”

Prince Edward also took time during his tour to speak to members of the centre’s library reading group and patients who are receiving help to give up smoking.

The new St Ann’s Valley Centre combines health, council, housing, and community services under one roof.

Centre manager Steve Pepper said: “The centre’s been well received. People really appreciate having all the services under one roof.”

He said the new library had seen double the number of new members join in the last month, compared to those who joined at the old St Ann’s Library at the same period in 2011.

Resident Pamela Breffitt said: “I think it’s a wonderful building and it can only be good for St Ann’s.”

Prince Edward also enjoyed a Jubilee tea party with pupils from Blue Bell Hill Primary School, in St Ann’s, during his visit to the area.
