Volunteer Christine Manby has been named in the New Year’s Honours list after years of service with the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS).
Christine, from Sheffield, who has volunteered for the service for 20 years, has been awarded the OBE. She said: “I was absolutely taken aback to get the OBE, I thought it was unbelievable.
“I read the letter several times and was just amazed it should happen to me.
“I enjoy what I do because it is working with teams of volunteers that are always magnificent. They are there at the end of the phone and, unless they are in really difficult times, they will respond and just put things to one side.
“I never fail to be overwhelmed by their responses.”
During the floods in 2007, Christine led teams of over 200 to deliver food to homes cut off by water.
Another name on the list is Professor Keith Ridgway, of the University of Sheffield, who has been made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to manufacturing research.
He said: “I am greatly honoured to have been awarded a CBE, which pays tribute to an extraordinary journey not just by myself, but in partnership with colleagues in the world’s best manufacturing companies and the high tech supply chain that supports their aims.
“It is a source of great pride to me that this work is being led in a part of the world always known for its skilled craftsmanship and expertise in making the very best products and that we are showing what this means for the next century in major industries such as aerospace and energy.”
