Hunt for heroes

The search is on to find local heroes who deserve to win free tickets to the Olympics.

Slough Borough Council has been urging its residents to nominate local unsung heroes to receive tickets to some of the London 2012 events.

The council has one pair of tickets for the opening ceremony in London and one pair of tickets for the closing ceremony, as well as 21 pairs of tickets for the rowing or sprint canoeing at the Eton Dorney Olympic venue.

It is looking for carers, members of voluntary or community groups, good neighbours or just people who embody the Olympic and Paralympic values of courage, determination, inspiration, equality, respect, friendship and excellence.

Chief executive, Ruth Bagley, said: “We are looking for Slough’s unsung heroes. Those who go above and beyond for our town or its residents.

“Having the Olympics on our doorstep is very exciting and with the torch relay coming through Slough on 10 July and the main events starting on 27 July it will be a summer to remember.

“So we want to say thank you to local people who make our town better for everyone by giving them the chance to attend this once in a lifetime event. Please tell us who deserves this chance.”

The Olympic torch will arrive in Huntercombe Lane, Slough, at 12.25pm on July 10, and leave through Ragstone Road at approximately 2.10pm.

A spokesperson for the council said: “The Olympic torch relay is Slough’s moment to shine; a once in a lifetime opportunity for local residents, schools and businesses to line the streets and witness the spectacle of the torch relay going through their communities.”
