Sukhit Dhaliwal is set to be the new official mayor of Slough Borough Council. The former deputy mayor, 51, is due to take over the chains of the office from Cllr Jagjit Grewal.
The future mayor is a mother of two and her husband Arvind is also a Slough councillor. She will be Slough’s first Asian female mayor.
Mrs Dhaliwal was born in Tarantaran, Punjab and now runs the Maharaja sweet shop in Wexham Road.
Reshbeg Singh Dhillon, her father, was Slough’s first elected Asian councillor, but he has since returned to India.
Mrs Dhaliwal was briefly considering joining the conservatives two years ago, but she changed her mind and decided to remain loyal to the Labour party.
