Pupil’s poster turned into hoarding

Youngster Alexis Reene has seen her artwork made into giant hoardings after winning a competition.

Alexis, 10, from the John Donne primary school, in Peckham, won a contest to design a safety poster for a building site in Queen’s Road, Peckham.

She unveiled the new hoardings at a special ceremony on the site, which is being run by construction, infrastructure and design business Morgan Sindall.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, of Southwark Council, said: “We have some very talented and creative children in Southwark and this is a wonderful way for them to get involved in the big developments in their community as well as make them aware of the dangers of playing in and around building sites.”

A modern and greener office building is being created on the site for the council.

Norman Watts, site manager at Overbury, part of the Morgan Sindall Group, said: “The competition was a fun way to engage with local children and help them to learn more about what happens on a building site, the associated hazards and the importance of health and safety.

“The winning poster captured all the messages we wanted to get across and by displaying it on the site hoardings we hope to have further understanding among the wider community.”

A group of children from the school visited the site for the unveiling ceremony and winning artist Alexis was presented with a prize of £40 of cinema vouchers.

Her poster had the word danger in big letters across the top and showed a person on a ladder with bricks tumbling down above them.
