Abdul’s 15-year story as Wakefield curry king

Wakefield chef Abdul Ghafoor is celebrating 15 years in the takeaway and diner business. Abdul launched his first takeaway on Broadway, Lupset in 1997 and his food has been popular ever since. He uses a range of authentic Indian ingredients and delicious, inventive new dishes. In 2005 he expanded and opened Abdul’s Takeaway and Diner on Southgate, Pontefract.

Hepworth welcomes half a million people

The Hepworth Wakefield is enjoying a triple celebration; its first birthday, its 500,000th visitor and an award nomination. The £35m gallery has been named as one of four finalists for the £100,000 Art Fund Prize to become ‘museum of the year’.

Antartic explorer from Sharlston honoured with blue plaque

A Wakefield born man who explored the Antarctic by foot and became renowned for his contribution to science on the other side of the world is at last being recognised in the village where he was born. Trevor Hatherton was born in 1924 in Sharlston and studied at the Lee Brigg Primary School and Normanton Grammar School.
