Wigan schoolgirl’s monster role

Wigan schoolgirl Sophia Andrews has won the role as the voice of a lead character in a hit American TV show. She will be playing the lead character of Tiny in the animated series Dinosaur Train which follows the adventures of the Pteranodon family.

It has gained millions of fans around the world and will be given a new English-accented soundtrack before it is broadcast on British screens.

11 year old Sophia has been making regular trips to a Manchester studio to record the voice of Tiny for 40 half-hour episodes.

Sophia’s distinctive voice, excellent diction and an acting ability has been honed over past four years at Wigan’s Willpower Youth Theatre.

Dinosaur Train is set to be shown on Nickelodeon later in 2012.

Sophia’s mum Jill has said that the whole experience has been very enjoyable one: “Sophia was put forward by Intercity Casting that Willpower’s Caroline Joynt runs and she went for an audition in Manchester where she read out something about the character and then performed some lines.

“She was also in contention for another part, Shiny, but was in the end told she had got the main one. It’s dead exciting. She has done two episodes so far and records her part in an isolation booth at the Flix Studios in Manchester.

“Apparently other actors have recorded quite a few of the episodes already but it’s taking Sophia longer because she’s got a much bigger part. She hasn’t seen any of the actors yet because apparently the parts are usually recorded separately.

“It is not just a question of reading from a script. She has to prepare well for the part to know how to vocally act it and she has to practise her squawking too!”
