Sporting stars head off to finals

Bury’s top sporting stars have been announced at a special awards ceremony, and will now go on to represent the borough in the regional finals.

Bury Council announced six winners to the sound of cheers and applause at the Bury Sports Awards.

The awards aim to recognise the hard work and achievements of residents in the borough in all areas of sport.

Individuals and clubs were nominated for the different categories and the winner of each category will now go on to the regional finals – the Greater Manchester Sports Awards.

Councillor Jane Lewis, executive member for leisure, tourism and culture at Bury Council, said: “My congratulations go to all the nominees and winners, and good luck to the six winners who will be representing Bury at the Greater Manchester Awards. I would also like to thank the sponsors for their generous support.

“Bury is packed full of sporting talent and these awards are a great way of acknowledging the many athletes, coaches and clubs in our borough.”

The winners are: Nicole Short – Sports Achiever of the Year; Mark O’Brien – Disabled Sports Achiever of the Year; Andy Walmsley – Volunteer in Sport Award; Craig Hickford – Coach of the Year; Woodbank FC – Club of the Year; Stuart Howarth – Unsung Hero in Sport Award.

Six special recognition awards were also announced during the ceremony at the Radcliffe Civic Suite.
